      <title>Brassinosteroid in combination with cytokinin increases the efficiency to induce somatic embryogenesis</title>
      <description>&lt;img width="200" alt="Brassino" title="Brassino" src="http://plant_dev.jatai.ufg.brhttps://files.cercomp.ufg.br/weby/up/1025/o/dez_2013_028.JPG?1530326893" /&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Brassinosteroid increases the cytokinin efficiency to induce direct somatic embryogenesis in leaf explants of&lt;em&gt; Coffea arabica &lt;/em&gt;L. (Rubiaceae)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;The combination of different plant growth regulators can result in beneficial effects in the induction of &lt;em&gt;in vitro&lt;/em&gt; morphogenetic pathways. Explants cultured on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 &amp;micro;M 24-epiBR (brassinosteroid) in association with 2-iP (cytokinin) produced 6.8 times more somatic embryos than the explants cultured with only 2-iP. Histological analyses also provided evidence that the supplementation of brassinosteroids in the culture medium could have influenced somatic embryogenesis differentiation. &amp;nbsp;Somatic embryos obtained in the presence of brassinosteroid and cytokinin were better structured morpho-histologically as compared to those obtained in the medium with just cytokinin. This study opens new perspectives for the use of brassinosteroids in the somatic embryogenesis of &lt;em&gt;C. arabica&lt;/em&gt;, so as to optimize the &lt;em&gt;in vitro&lt;/em&gt; regeneration systems used in genetic improvement programs in &lt;em&gt;C. arabica&lt;/em&gt; productive systems.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Regeneration of triploid plants from endosperm culture </title>

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Due to the triploid nature of endosperm, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;em&gt;in vitro&lt;/em&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;culture of endosperm tissues has been considered a direct method for production of polyploids. We report the establishment of an&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;em&gt;in vitro&amp;nbsp;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;span&gt;regeneration system from endosperm culture for production of triploid&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Passiflora edulis&lt;/em&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;plants, the main commercial species of passionfruit. Thidiazuron was the only type of cytokinin that induced shoot production in the endosperm tissues; the highest number of shoots was produced in the presence of 4.5 and 9.0 &amp;mu;M TDZ. Flow cytometry and chromosomal analysis confirmed that endosperm-derived plants were triploid. The internal standard,&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Pisum sativum,&lt;/em&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;and the diploid control, seed-derived&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Passiflora edulis&lt;/em&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;plants (2n = 2&amp;times; = 18), showed average DNA quantities of 9.09 and 3.35 pg respectively. Endosperm-derived&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;em&gt;P. edulis&lt;/em&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;plants showed an average DNA content of 5.10 pg and a chromosome count of 27 (3n = 3&amp;times; = 27), the same ploidy level as the endosperm (triploid). We believe that our data open new prospects for breeding of passionfruit by means of a stable and reproducible regeneration system from endosperm culture leading to generation of triploid plants.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;In a recent paper&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/tpj.13904" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;van Es&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;em&gt;et al.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;(2018)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;reveal a surprising role for the plant growth regulator ethylene in the differentiation of petal epidermal cells. The authors set out to investigate the control of overall petal cell shape and size, observing that, unlike most vegetative tissues, &amp;lsquo;petals &amp;hellip; have a morphology that requires differential regulation of cell proliferation and expansion in the basal and distal parts&amp;rsquo;. To better understand how this differential regulation of the primary drivers of development occur, they studied the three members of the TCP5-like transcription factor family in Arabidopsis. These proteins represent a sister group to the 5 members of the JAW subfamily of TCP proteins, and together these two groups form the CIN clade of the type II TCP family.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
